Speaking

Looking for a speaker? Masha's novels have been selected as freshman reads at universities from New York to California. She has been a writer-in-residence and speaker at venues around the country, discussing writing, journalism, her experiences in Afghanistan, the Middle East and Russia, and her non-profit projects. Send her an email to check on availability.

Masha’s public reading on campus was packed—one of our best turnouts ever. Her versatility as a writer and activist is reflected in her comfort with audiences of all kinds. During her visit, she also spoke to a gender studies class about women in Afghanistan, a political science class on the state of journalism in the Middle East, and a fiction writing class on the craft of novel writing. Masha lives her convictions, and her positive and pragmatic interactions with students inspire them to do the same. We look forward to having her back in the future.

The students in my Advanced Feature Writing Class at Hofstra University were entranced when Masha Hamilton spoke to them about her reporting experiences in Afghanistan. She described interviewing the wife of a Taliban-connected poppy farmer, and from that anecdote they learned much about courage in journalism. She also illuminated the value of persistence and the value of knowing how and when to ask the right questions in delicate, potentially dangerous situations. Then they learned how to use information to write a story replete with art and craft - and how to call on material gathered as a journalist to write first rate fiction, which Masha also does.

Masha inspired the creative writing classes she visited, enthralled the audience at her reading, and challenged us to become better writers with her writing assignments and frank advice. You will want her to come back again, and soon. We do.

Masha Hamilton's talks are an invaluable and essential window on the world. My students were clearly moved and enlightened by her stories; they're still talking about them. Masha is a dynamic speaker whose stories challenge audiences not only to think critically, but to be more fully present in the human experience.
