Nasrin, 31, met her husband Feras “through a window” in Damascus, where she grew up. He was her neighbor, nine years older, and at age 14 she decided she loved him. She wrote him a note suggesting they meet, wrapped it around a rock and threw it through his open window. They began to communicate this way on a regular basis. “She wrote me probably 600 letters,” he says. “I kept them all.” He petitioned Nasrin’s parents to allow him to marry her six times before they agreed. The two were married when she was 16, and now have three daughters. At first, the start of the civil war surprised but didn’t alarm them: “We did not expect the trouble to boil into the center of Damascus,” Feras says. But their home was less than five miles from the Mukhabarat (secret police) building, and it became a disputed area, disrupted by one act of violence after another. A car parked nearby on the street blew up, men were shot in view of their children, and Feras’s oldest brother was kidnapped. A ransom was requested, but Feras’s family could not afford it; they still do not know what happened to him. Nasrin and Feras left Syria with the equivalent of seven dollars, spent four years in Jordan and came to the US in 2016. “I don’t feel like we are progressing,” Nasrin says, and Feras adds, “Here, the money evaporates.” Those letters? رسائل حب من خلال نافذة

التقت نسرين التي تبلغ من العمر 31 سنة بزوجها فراس "من خلال نافذة" في مسقط رأسها بمدينة دمشق. فراس كان جارها ويكبرها في العمر بتسع سنوات، وعندما بلغت سن الرابعة عشرة أدركت نسرين بأنها وقعت في حبه. فكتبت إليه رسالة تقترح فيها أن يتقابلا، وقامت بطيّها حول صخرة ثم رمتها نحو نافذته المفتوحة، وهكذا كانت بداية التواصل حيث استمرت بينهما بشكل منتظم. يقول: "لقد كتبت لي 600 رسالة على الأرجح". وأتبع كلامه قائلا: "لقد احتفظت بهم جميعًا". تقدم فراس بطلب الزواج من نسرين إلى والديها مرات عديدة والتي بلغت ست مرات قبل أن يتم الإتفاق فيما بينهم. حين تزوجا، كانت قد بلغت السادسة عشرة من عمرها ولديهما الآن ثلاث بنات. نشأت الحرب الأهلية، وعلى الرغم من أنها كانت مفاجٍأه لهما في البداية، إلا أنهم لم يعوا خطورة الموقف بعد. يقول فراس: "لم نكن نتوقع أن تتفاقم المشكلة في قلب مدينة دمشق". ولكن لم يجدوا مفراً من مواجهة المشكله حيث أن منزلهم كان على بعد أقل من خمسة أميال من مبنى المخابرات (الشرطة السرية) والتي أصبحت منطقة متنازع عليها، وبالتالي تعطلت بسبب أعمال عنف المتتالية. ومنذ ذلك الحين توالت الأحداث المأساوية، ابتداءاً من انفجار سيارة مفخخة كانت تركن في الشارع على مقربه منهم، ومن ثم إصابة رجال بالرصاص على مرأئ من أطفالهم، وانتهاءاً باختطاف شقيق فراس الأكبر. تم طلب فدية حينها للإبقاء على حياته وإطلاق سراحه، ولكن لم تتمكن عائلة فراس من تحمل كلفتها ولا زال مصير الأخ مجهول بالنسبة إليهم. اضطر نسرين وفراس إلى مغادرة سوريا مع مبلغ زهيد من المال ما يعادل سبعة دولارات، وأمضيا أربع سنوات في الأردن إلى أن قَدِموا إلى الولايات المتحدة في عام 2016. تقول نسرين "لا أشعر بأننا نحرز تقدمًا" ، ، ويضيف فراس ، "في هذا المكان، يتبخر المال". أما عن تلك الرسائل، فقد تركوها خلفهم في المنزل السوري حيث اضطر نسرين وفراس إلى الفرار منذ أن تم تدميره. Cartas de Amor a través de la Ventana

Nasrin, de 31 años, conoció a su esposo Feras “a través de una ventana” en Damasco, donde ella creció. Él era su vecino, nueve años mayor, y a la edad de 14 años ella decidió que lo amaba. Le escribió una nota sugiriendo que se encontraran, la envolvió alrededor de una piedra y la tiró a través de una ventana abierta. Los dos comenzaron a comunicarse de esta manera regularmente. “Probablemente ella me escribió 600 cartas”, dice él. “Las guardé todas”. Èl le pidió a los padres de Nasrin que le permitieran casarse con ella seis veces antes de que ellos accedieran. Los dos se casaron cuando ella tenía 16 años, y actualmente tienen tres hijas.
